Harpur Palate: a Literary Journal
Volume 6, Number 2 (2007)
The second issue of Harpur Palate’s sixth volume showcases a retro-looking cover photo captured by Bruce Wrighton and designed by Kathryn Henion. Wrighton and Henion’s talent and visions provided this issue with a vintage-feeling photo of Curley’s Bar and Grill — located in Johnson City, NY — circa 1985. This simple yet intriguing cover photo sets the tone for the compelling pieces that are published within this issue — written by esteemed writers such as Charles Haverty, Cynthia Grier Lotze and Mary Biddinger. Haverty, whose stories have been found in The Gettysburg Review and the Colorado Review, Lotze, whose work appears in the documentary film One Nation Underground, and Biddinger, whose poems have been published in a variety of journals such as Crazyhorse and The Iowa Review, all offer similar motifs that contribute to giving the issue a raw and hopeful feel. Through their pieces titled “The Troubles,” “How You Are Going to Save the World” and “It’s All Too Much,” these authors raise questions regarding identity, self-discovery, redemption through the emotional content that each piece provides.
