Abstract
In this essay the author characterizes the explanatory method of presocratic philosophers, especially Empedocles, in terms of some of the components activated in the surviving texts.

Jerry Stannard presented “Presocratic Methodology” to the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy at its meeting with the American Philological Association in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1961. A later version was published as “The Presocratic Origin of Explanatory Method” in the Philosophical Quarterly 15 (60) (1965):193-206.
