Description
Luis was born with myelomeningocele (spina bifida) and did not receive appropriate treatment promptly after birth. It was until his eighth birthday that Luis was able to receive treatment to remove the growth protruding on his back. Unfortunately, following this successful surgery and rehabilitation, Luis’ father grew gravely ill immediately following the procedure, and as a result lost most of his sense of hearing. Because of their health battles, Luis and his father share a close relationship.
It was this close relationship identified in previous interviews that inspired Manuel to take this photograph. Additionally, the ongoing battle that Manuel (the photographer) suffers with dyslexia, and the social stigma he has faced, created a space for them to communicate how each has confronted and overcome many societal barriers. When Luis was asked how he felt when we took this picture, he stated ‘I liked it because I get along really well with my father, so there was no problem with the photograph.’ This picture also counters the dominant ‘mother-and-child’ photographs taken by humanitarian organizations that ignore the role of fathers in forced migrant families and counters the dominant stereotype of the incorrigible Mexican ‘macho’ who is hyper-masculine and ignores any paternal responsibilities (Gutmann, 1996).

Luis nació con mielomeningocele (espina bífida) y no recibió pronto el tratamiento adecuado después de su nacimiento. Fue hasta que cumplió ocho años de edad que Luis pudo recibir tratamiento para extirpar la gran protuberancia de su espalda. Desafortunadamente, inmediatamente después de esta exitosa cirugía y rehabilitación, el papá de Luis calló gravemente enfermo, y como resultado perdió la mayor parte del sentido del oído. Debido a sus batallas de salud, Luis y su padre Pascual comparten un estrecha relación.
Fue esta estrecha relación, identificada en previas entrevistas que inspiraron a Manuel a tomar esta fotografía. Adicionalmente la continua batalla que Manuel (el fotógrafo) sufre con su dislexia, y el estigma social que él ha encarado, creando un espacio para ellos en donde comunicar cómo cada uno ha confrontado y sobrellevado muchas barreras sociales. Cuando a Luis se le preguntó cómo se sintió cuando les tomamos esta foto, dijo ‘me gustó porque me llevo muy bien con mi padre, por eso no hay problema con la fotografía’. Esta foto también se opone la dominante fotografía de ‘madre e hijo’ tomada por organizaciones humanitarias que ignora el rol de los padres en las familias de migrantes forzados, y se opone al dominante estereotipo de un incorregible macho Mexicano, híper masculino e ignorante de cualquier responsabilidad paternal.
