Abstract

I will seek to test the possibility that Parmenides was referring, in the Way of Being (the Aletheia), to existence-as-a-whole. According to this hypothesis Parmenides, in expounding 'the first way' should be understood to be making clear what can be said without contradiction about existence-as-a-whole, i.e. about what is, about Being.

Notes

Victorino Tejera presented “Parmenides: To Be or Not to Be” to the Society at its meeting with the Eastern Division of the American Philosophical Association in Boston in 1972. A revised version became chapter 3 in his book Rewriting the History of Ancient Greek Philosophy. Greenwood 1997.

Victorino Tejera is Emeritus Professor at SUNY Stony Brook.
