Abstract
Prier reviews the interpretations of Heraclitus by Guthrie and Hegel in terms of a scientific viewpoint and an idealist viewpoint. Prier follows a suggestion by Cherniss to examine the fragments in symbolic and structural terms.

Raymond Adolph Prier presented “Symbol and Structure in Heraclitus” to the Society at its meeting with the American Philological Association in Philadelphia in 1972. This paper became a part of his book, Archaic Logic: Symbol and Structure in Heraclitus, Parmenides and Empedocles. DeGruyter 1976, reprinted 2011.
