Abstract

This study of the Speakership Contest of 1877 is the culmination of three semesters work in the undergraduate honors program at the State University of New York at Binghamton. The topic has considerable significance in the post-bellum political history of the United States. The investigation is concerned with the events precipitated by the electoral contest of 1876-77, and adds to an under- standing of parties and politics in the late 1670" «.
