  • Who Can Submit?

Any Binghamton University student who is currently enrolled as an undergraduate student or recent alumni (graduated within a year of submission) may submit an original article for consideration, provided the student owns or is authorized to use the copyright to the submitted work.

Papers with multiple authors—including faculty—will be considered; however, a Binghamton University undergraduate student must be listed as the first author.

    Faculty Sponsor

All submissions must be endorsed by a Binghamton University faculty member. Submissions must be accompanied by a completed and signed Faculty Sponsor Form.

    General Submission Rules

Submitted articles cannot have been previously published, nor be forthcoming in an archival journal or book (print or electronic). This does not include working-paper series. In addition, by submitting material to the Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal (BUUJ), the author is stipulating that the material is not currently under review at another journal (electronic or print) and that he or she will not submit the material to another journal (electronic or print) until the completion of the editorial decision process at the BUUJ.

Articles published in the BUUJ may be published elsewhere; however, it is the responsibility of the author to be aware of the policies of other journals.

If subjects are used, you must provide proof of written approval from the Human Subjects Research Review Committee for human subjects and the IACUC for animal subjects.

    Original Research Requirements

Submitted articles must represent original research in your field. This may include, but is not limited to, data analysis, theoretical work, or critical review. Submissions must include a statement by the student describing how the paper contributes to the field (such as presenting a new idea, addressing a knowledge gap, or providing a new perspective), based on what is considered original research by the discipline. Since fields differ in this regard, statements will vary accordingly.

    Submission Formats

    Research Paper, Articles & Essays

Submissions should not exceed 20 pages, including figures, tables, and images, not including references.

Short Stories, Prose, Flash Fiction, & Creative Non-Fiction

Submissions should not exceed 10 pages, not including references.

    Poetry & Songs

Submissions should not exceed 10 pages, not including references. We accept a collection of poems as a single submission.

    Visual Art

Submissions may include photographs, paintings, drawings, prints, collages, graphic designs, digital illustrations, mixed media, and sculptures.

We recommend submitting a high-resolution original image file to ensure the best possible quality. Avoid using artificially upscaled or “blown-up” images, as they may result in pixelation and poor reproduction.

    Media: Videos & Audio

Submissions may include plays, dance performances, musical pieces, documentaries, short films, and other time-based media. Videos should not exceed 30 minutes in length. Media may be uploaded directly or submitted as a streaming link.

Please note that while Digital Commons streams videos on the website at a maximum of 1080p, higher resolution files may still be uploaded. They can be downloaded and viewed in full quality by the user.

    Formatting Requirements

All submissions (with the exception of media formats) must be submitted as a Word document. Please see the BUUJ's Formatting Guidelines for formatting requirements for initial submissions.
