Authors

Author #1

Abstract

This paper explores the “welfare queen” stereotype through the lens of Ange-Marie Hancock’s concept of a public identity. The author argues that disseminating false and harmful information based on stereotypes promotes anti-compassionate sentiment. In this formula, the “welfare queen” image in Ronald Reagan’s infamous radio address is analyzed as a form of disinformation, as encouraged by Marwick et al., that thwarts an individuals’ empathetic response to poverty.
